Asbestos Survey of Old Derby Leprosarium Community

Overview

SW19 were engaged by the Department of Communities to complete an asbestos survey of the Old Derby Leprosarium Community. The scope of works required the sampling and analysis of any materials that could potentially contain asbestos fibers. These results would then be formatted into a report that can be used to manage these materials going forward.

Site Inspection

The inspection covered all buildings in the community that were safe to access, the red dirt roads and the ground were there wasn’t a high level of vegetation.

During the inspection over 60 materials were sampled and later analysed at a NATA accredited laboratory, with over 50 returning a positive result for asbestos fibers. These included fibrous cement, bituminous membranes, floor tiles, floor coverings and gaskets. The buildings that were deemed unsafe to enter had several products presumed to contain asbestos fibers.

Outcomes

The asbestos survey report outlined where asbestos containing materials were found throughout the site and has recommended controls and actions for these products depending on their condition.
